Internet and Computer Policy

Please read these terms of use carefully before accessing any Martin County Public Library computer. By using the library computers, you signify that you have read these terms and agree to be bound by and comply with them. If you do not agree to be bound by these terms, library computers will be unavailable to you.

Introduction

The mission of the library’s computers is to provide information resources and services and to ensure that all residents have free and open access to ideas and information which are fundamental to a democracy. In this role, the library has made information available in a variety of formats. The library’s computer system provides the opportunity to integrate electronic resources from information networks around the world with the library’s other resources.

Disclaimer

The Internet, as an information resource, enables the library to provide information beyond the confines of its collection. It allows access to ideas, information and commentary from around the globe and a vast array of tools and resources for different age levels and points of view. The library does not endorse the viewpoints or vouch for the accuracy of information obtained through the Internet.

Filtering

Internet resources may contain material of a controversial nature. Parents of minor children are responsible for overseeing their child's use of the Internet.

Ethical Use

All users of electronic information resources such as the Internet are expected to use these resources in a responsible manner, consistent with the educational and informational purposes for which they are provided. It is unacceptable to use the library’s computer systems and Internet resources for any of the following.

  • For any purposes which violate applicable U.S or state laws. Users must respect all copyright laws and licensing agreements pertaining to software, files and other resources obtained via the Internet.
  • Destruction of or damage to equipment, software, or data belonging to the library.
  • Disruption or interference of network users or services. Such interference of disruption includes, but is not limited to: distribution of unsolicited advertising, harassment, libeling, or slandering of others and propagation of computer worms or viruses.
  • Use Library computers to access message boards, instant messaging, or chat rooms.
  • Installing software from the Internet on library computers.
  • Users will be allowed to save documents on removable media and print only. Any media brought to the library should be scanned for viruses before you use them on library computers.

Due to the resources available for students, organizations, and governments, the library will allow access to certain electronic resources. All requests will need to be pre-approved by library staff. Staff members will use their judgment when reviewing requests by patrons.

Wi-Fi(Wireless) Internet Access

Due to the unsecure nature of wireless internet access, users should not transmit personal, credit, or any sensative information over the internet. The library cannot be held responsible for poor or low wireless connections on any alterations or interference to equipment from wireless connections. The library reserves the right to terminate wireless connections at any time. All library policies apply to wireless internet access.

Assistance

Library staff will assist patrons with online use as time permits, but cannot offer personal instruction.

Violations of the Guidelines

Users violating these guidelines will be advised of the library’s policy for ethical use and asked to comply. Users who violate these guidelines after previous warnings will result in suspension from using the library’s computers. Criminal violations of laws governing the internet could result in criminal prosecution.

Time Limits

To support access for all users, the library has the right to enforce time limits of one (1) hour. If we see the need to reduce the limit below one (1) hour, we will announce it to all users.
